PE at Kiveton Park Meadows Junior School
At Kiveton Park Meadows, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of physical activity and well-being through our PE curriculum. We provide children with opportunities to develop physical competence, confidence, and a healthy understanding of movement. Our approach encourages teamwork, perseverance, and a positive attitude toward both individual and group challenges.

Our Goals

Through a broad range of physical activities—from competitive sports to cooperative games—children develop resilience, strength, coordination, and a sense of achievement. Our PE curriculum aligns closely with our school values and encourages pupils to embrace the benefits of fitness and well-being, empowering them to lead active, healthy lives now and in the future.

Why PE Matters

Physical education enhances children’s health, confidence, teamwork, and resilience. Our PE curriculum supports holistic development, encouraging children to build strength, coordination, and a love for staying active. By participating in diverse sporting activities, pupils gain skills and habits that contribute to lifelong health and may open doors to future opportunities in sports and personal development.

Our PE Curriculum

We are committed to providing a high-quality PE and sports curriculum that nurtures skills, talents, and enthusiasm for physical activity. Children explore a variety of sports and physical disciplines, from traditional games to contemporary activities, helping them develop perseverance, teamwork, and a sense of personal achievement.

Swimming
Children in Year 4 participate in swimming lessons at our local pool. With support from instructors, pupils learn to:
-
Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
-
Use a range of strokes effectively
-
Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Engagement in Competitions

We actively take part in competitions within school, across the Trust, and in the wider community. Events such as borough-wide tournaments at Rotherham United’s grounds and dance showcases at our feeder secondary school, help children develop skills, confidence, and a sense of fair play.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

We offer a wide range of sporting activities that change throughout the year, including activities such as dance, cheerleading, multi-skills, and football.
Year 6 pupils have the opportunity to attend a 3-day residential visit, participating in activities they might not usually experience. These activities promote teamwork, resilience, independence, and confidence, supporting both personal and social development.
Our School Grounds

Our outdoor spaces provide excellent opportunities for active play:
-
Large field for running and games
-
A climbing wall for fitness and fun
-
A trim trail to challenge balance and agility
Our Sports Leaders organise daily activities and games on our two playground spaces, culminating in an intra-sport competition at the end of each week.
How PE is Taught

PE is taught using the Complete PE scheme, a structured approach that ensures progression, consistency, and coverage of the National Curriculum. The scheme provides clear lesson plans, learning objectives, and assessment guidance across all areas of physical education.

Lessons are active, engaging, and skill-focused, combining core techniques with opportunities for children to apply skills in games, sports, and fitness challenges. Through Complete PE, pupils develop competence in a wide range of activities, including:
-
Invasion games (e.g., football, hockey, basketball)
-
Net and wall games (e.g., tennis, badminton)
-
Striking and fielding games (e.g., cricket, rounders)
-
Gymnastics and movement skills
-
Dance and creative movement
-
Athletics and track & field events
-
Swimming and water safety

Who We Learn About

Pupils explore the work of famous composers from history, such as JS Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as contemporary composers like Andrew Lloyd-Webber.
Supporting Every Learner

Our PE curriculum is fully inclusive. Adaptations for pupils with SEND or additional needs include modified equipment, visual supports, and inclusive activities. Larger balls and adaptive tools, obstacle courses, sensory circuits, and clear instructions ensure that every child can participate confidently and enjoy the benefits of physical activity.
